IS YOUR ENGINE PINGING?
FILLING UP WITH HIGH OCTANE?
YOU MAY NOT BE.
How many times have you pulled up to a gas pump, chosen 92 or 94 Octane and filled up your tank? Many times is the answer. Some of these gas pumps have 3 levels of Octane and one hose line. Meaning whatever octane level you pick is going to come down the same hose. So what if the last guy to use this pump hit the 89 Octane level? What it means is, the hose is still filled with that low octane gas. So when you hit the high octane button, you won’t be getting it till the gas hose empties the 89 octane. Where does that go? In your tank. You may say, big deal it’s only what’s in the hose but with a small motorcycle gas tank, it could be as much as 15% of the tank and that my friends, means you are not putting 92 Octane in your tank. In a big truck, it would not be noticable but a small gas tank like a scooter and the octane level is brought down considerably! That’s why I always get fuel from the pump that has only one gas line on the high octane setting.
Another good tip is to carry octane with you on the bike. We were riding across Alberta once on fumes, praying for a gas station. We found one in East Bum-Fuck and all they had was regular gas. The bike ran like shit till I got to the next station and put in 92. They sell pure octane in little tubes you just open and pour in the tank. I bought mine at Canadian Tire but I’m sure they’re available at most auto stores and some gas stations.
Being a firefighter means you are always prepared for the worst so make sure you carry your rain-gear, tool kit and first aid kit at all times. I keep all this stuff in my down side saddle bag, as I tend not to use it too often. If you’re a member of HOG, don’t forget to carry your card or at least your membership number. Oh Yeah, carry a long rope too, you never know when the impossible will happen and your ride breaks down. 30 feet of 1/4 nylon should do it. Barring you ‘forgot’ any of the above towing is a much better alternative than ‘Two Guys Up’…..Madmyk
